New Compost Project for Selby Allotments

Our Zero Selby has launched an exciting new initiative with Compost-It to help residents reduce waste and boost local green spaces: a compost tumbler project. Our community-led campaign, dedicated to creating a healthier, greener Selby, is working with Selby Town Council to install compost tumblers at local allotments.

The project aims to divert organic waste from landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The compost produced will then be used to enrich gardens, allotments, and community green spaces.

"Composting addresses the critical issue of waste reduction," explains Matt Fisher from Our Zero Selby. "By diverting organic materials from landfills, we significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, the resulting compost provides a natural and effective fertiliser, boosting growth."

Residents and allotment holders have already expressed interest in the project and will play a key role in its success. Following the installation of the tumblers, participants will receive training on how to use them effectively to create high-quality compost. Two tumblers are already in place, ready for use.

"This is a fantastic example of what we can achieve when we work together as a community," says Matt. "By encouraging residents to compost their organic waste, we can collectively reduce our environmental impact, create beautiful green spaces, and build a more sustainable future for Selby."

The compost tumbler project reflects Our Zero Selby’s wider mission to promote the three R’s – reduce, reuse, and recycle – and encourage community involvement in reducing carbon emissions and caring for the environment. The campaign believes that small, collective actions can make a significant difference.

Allotment holders in Selby, Barlby, Brayton, and Thorpe Willoughby who are interested in getting involved are encouraged to contact Matt Fisher at matt@upforyorkshire.org.uk or 01757 291111.
