Ringlet Butterfly

Appearance: Dark brown with rings on the underside of the wings. 

Upper Wings: Dark brown with a subtle hint of purple. 

Under Wings: Brown with multiple eye spots (rings). 

Differences between Males and Females: Females are slightly lighter in color. 

When to See: June to August. 

What They Eat: Adults feed on nectar from brambles and thistles. Caterpillars eat grasses like meadow foxtail. 

Migrant: Not a migrant. 

Common in Selby Area: Yes, common in damp, grassy areas. 

How to Help: Maintain damp grasslands and plant nectar-rich flowers. 

Good Places to See: Damp meadows and woodland rides. 

Interesting Fact: The Ringlet is one of the few butterflies that can fly in dull weather.
