Peacock Butterfly
Appearance: Red with striking eye spots on each wing.
Upper Wings: Bright red with blue, yellow, and black eye spots.
Under Wings: Dark brown, almost black.
Differences between Males and Females: Both sexes are similar in appearance.
When to See: March to October.
What They Eat: Adults feed on nectar from buddleia, dandelions, and willow catkins. Caterpillars eat nettles.
Migrant: Not a migrant.
Common in Selby Area: Yes, very common.
How to Help: Plant nettles and nectar-rich flowers.
Good Places to See: Gardens, parks, and woodland edges.
Interesting Fact: The Peacock's eye spots can scare away predators, making it look like a much larger animal.
