Orange Tip Butterfly

Appearance: White with orange-tipped wings in males. 

Upper Wings: Males have orange tips; females are plain white. 

Under Wings: Mottled greenish-grey. 

Differences between Males and Females: Males have bright orange wingtips, while females do not. 

When to See: April to June. 

What They Eat: Adults feed on nectar from cuckooflower and garlic mustard. Caterpillars eat the same plants. 

Migrant: Not a migrant. 

Common in Selby Area: Yes, common in spring. 

How to Help: Plant cuckooflower and garlic mustard. 

Good Places to See: Meadows, hedgerows, and gardens. 

Interesting Fact: The Orange Tip's green mottled underwings provide excellent camouflage against foliage.
