Dark Green Fritillary Butterfly

Appearance: Bright orange with dark spots.  

Upper Wings: Orange with dark brown spots.  

Under Wings: Greenish with silver spots.  

Differences between Males and Females: Females are slightly larger and paler.  

When to See: June to August.  

What They Eat: Adults feed on nectar from thistles and knapweed. Caterpillars eat violets.  

Migrant: Not a migrant.  

Common in Selby Area: Uncommon but can be found in suitable habitats.  

How to Help: Plant violets and maintain grasslands.  

Good Places to See: Grasslands, dunes, and heaths.  

Interesting Fact: The Dark Green Fritillary is one of the largest and fastest flying butterflies in Yorkshire.
