Brimstone Butterfly

Appearance: Bright yellow males and pale greenish-white females. 

Upper Wings: Males are bright yellow; females are greenish-white. 

Under Wings: Both sexes have a more muted, greenish color. 

Differences between Males and Females: Males are a brighter yellow than females. 

When to See: March to May and July to September. 

What They Eat: Adults feed on nectar from primroses, bluebells, and thistles. Caterpillars eat buckthorn leaves. 

Migrant: Not a migrant. 

Common in Selby Area: Yes, particularly in gardens and woodlands. 

How to Help: Plant buckthorn and nectar-rich flowers. 

Good Places to See: Woodland clearings and garden flowers. 

Interesting Fact: Brimstones are known for their long lifespan, living up to 13 months.
