Energy Efficiency in my Home

Guest blog - Zero Hero: My Takeaways from the Latest Event

I recently attended my second Zero Hero event, eager to hear about making my home more energy efficient. A key concern for me was finding trustworthy companies for services like insulation, heat pumps, and EPC assessments, especially those offering grant support. As with the first Zero Hero event, I left feeling informed and inspired, coming away with my questions answered and far more besides.

Kate from Yorkshire Energy Doctor CIC delivered a fantastic session, sharing valuable information, contacts, and insights. We enjoyed a lively Q&A, and even participated in a fun group quiz.

We'd already had the free refreshments and an introduction to the event by Claire and Matt, who work for Up for Yorkshire and are working specifically on the Our Zero Selby project.

People asked different questions as Kate moved through her slide content and activities, and for me at least, this multiplied what I got from the evening.

So, what did I learn?

Well, I know I'm on the right path with all my draft proofing and I'm looking forward to someone coming along to my house with a Thermal Imaging camera to see if I'm leaking heat from places that can be stopped.

I learned that most heat is lost through walls, not windows, and that most smart meters do work, despite the bad press.

I learned that its better to switch the central heating on when it's needed rather than leave it on all the time, and that 19 degrees is about right for my needs.

I was surprised to know that our lofts need a foot of insulation, so that is something I can look into.

A Global Bright Spot!

I was delighted to discover that Our Zero Selby has been recognised as one of 30 Global Bright Spots - projects that are creative responses to climate change in communities around the world by Forum for the Futures Future of Sustainability: Reimagining the Way the World Works. This prestigious accolade highlights Selby's innovative community-led approach to addressing climate change.

Selby is unique in its focus on community development, working with communities to identify how we can respond to climate change and improve the lives of people in our town.

When the two year project finishes, other towns around the UK can learn from what we have learned about identifying and implementing our ideas.

Join the Energy Revolution!

These Zero Hero events are a fantastic opportunity to learn, connect with experts, and take action on energy efficiency. I highly recommend attending the next "Zero Hero " event. Let's work together to create a more sustainable future for Selby and beyond!
