Welcome to Our Zero Selby: A Journey Towards Sustainability
We're thrilled to welcome you to the Our Zero Selby blog, a platform dedicated to exploring and advancing sustainability in our community and beyond. As we embark on this journey, we invite you to join us in envisioning and creating a more environmentally conscious and resilient future.
At Our Zero Selby, we believe in the power of collective action and local initiatives to drive positive change. Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to create a culture of sustainability in Selby and its surrounding areas, inspiring individuals, businesses, and organisations to embrace eco-friendly practices and reduce their carbon footprint.
But Our Zero Selby isn't just about us—it's about you, our community members, partners, and friends. Whether you're a seasoned environmental advocate or just beginning your sustainability journey, there's a place for you here. Together, we can transform Selby into a model of sustainability, where every action—no matter how small—contributes to a brighter future for generations to come.
So, join us as we explore, learn, and act towards a zero-carbon, zero-waste future.
Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation at our recent Spring Get Together event! The positivity and enthusiasm were palpable, creating a brilliant and hopeful atmosphere. It was a powerful evening, exploring how everyone can get involved in shaping, leading, and championing the changes they envision in their communities.
One of the highlights of the event was our discussion on various initiatives aimed at creating sustainability in Selby:
Nature Projects: From garden fruit tree planting and collecting nuts and seeds and rescuing seedlings to plant seedlings, to wildflower planting, rewilding and biodiversity initiatives, we're excited to embrace hands-on action to create wildlife havens and combat climate change.
Repair Café Roadshow: We discussed a proposed Repair Café roadshow, with a particular interest in repairing textiles and IT items. We envision a welcoming café environment where skilled volunteers help with repairs and offering skills sharing sessions.
Composting: Exploring small-scale household food waste collections and collaborating with local growers to turn waste into compost.
Active Travel: We have exciting ideas to increase active travel in Selby, including participating in The Big Bike Revival and offering free guided bike rides and bike fixing events.
In addition to these initiatives, we're proud to share our Earth Day pledges, where members of our community committed to taking concrete actions to protect our planet and promote sustainability.
As we embark on this journey, we invite you to be part of the movement. Join us for our drop-in sessions at Community House (next one is 5th June 12.00 – 14.00) or reach out if you're interested in any of our projects. Together, let's make a difference, one small step at a time.
Stay tuned for our upcoming posts, and if you're interested in contributing or have suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered, we'd love to hear from you!
