Our Community, Our Climate, Our Chance

Our Zero Selby

Funding from the National Lottery Community Fund has allowed us to restart the Our Zero Selby project, meaning we can bring exciting new projects to Selby! These will be aimed at reducing carbon emissions of Selby, while also addressing issues of skills, jobs, fairness, health and wellbeing.

During the Pilot Phase of the project, residents were consulted and generated a list of 25 projects they wanted to see to improve Selby, from across 5 themes. These community-driven ideas will now guide future activities, rooting the project in the voices and aspirations of residents.

Our Zero Selby is a great opportunity for members of the community to shape Selby’s future, so if you would like to express interest, share ideas or get involved, please Get In Touch.

Our Themes

  • Buildings

Selby is full of the buildings we live in and the buildings we use. Our homes, our shops, our offices, our community centres. But are they working for you? Are they too cold, too hot, too expensive to run? What would you keep and what would you change?

  • Nature

In Selby and our surrounding areas we are so lucky to have a richness of green space. We’ve our parks and playing fields, gardens and allotments. How do you use these special spaces? What are your views on their future? We also have spaces that can be ‘less green’, like our streets, buildings, gardens, and land owned by businesses or the council. Would you like these spaces to be greener and, if yes, in what way?

  • Food

Food is right at the centre of our day-to-day living. What do we eat, where do we shop, where does our food come from and how was it produced? What kind of farming do we want to support? This topic covers everything from what we grow to what we throw, a good old brew to CO₂!

  • Travel

Whether we walk, bike, use public transport, or have access to a car, we all travel to one place or another. This topic covers our daily travel habits, and your views on how we move around - everything from air pollution to our local buses. We call this round: transport talks!

  • Waste

How often do we hear the terms, recycle, reuse and reduce. But what does this actually mean? And what do we actually do? Our Zero Selby is concentrating on what we buy, borrow and waste, looking at our shopping habits and how we get rid! Are you more dresses and smarts, or computer parts?

We recognise that these five themes often overlap and this is often where there is the most potential for change. For example, the buildings we use can also affect how we travel, while what we eat can shape our landscapes and how we interact with nature. We aim to explore some of these “co-benefits” during the project.
